Cooking grass fed beef is a little different than what you may be used to. You may have heard that grass fed beef is tougher, but this is simply not true. The issue comes in not preparing it and cooking it the right way. There are few tips that can help you get the desired steak that you want.
Turn the heat Down! Grass fed beef does not have as much fat as store bought beef. Therefore if you cook it too hot you can dry it out. Also, take the meat out ahead of time and let it marinade. This will bring more juices into the steak and help prevent it from drying out.
Don't overcook it! Chefs will tell you that the best steak is prepared at medium-rare. This preserves as much flavor, moisture, and tenderness as possible. Overcooking any steak will dry it out and make it tough.
The American Grassfed Association made the "Tips for Cooking Grassfed Beef" handout and I have attached it to this post. It is just one page of some helpful hints for cooking some amazing grass fed beef.
With many things in life we are going at them too fast and too hot. So let your steak marinade, turn down the grill and let the magic happen. Take the time while it is cooking to relax from the busy world we live in. Enjoy the sunset, listen to the birds singing, watch your kids playing, or just kick up your feet. Enjoy this time relaxing and let the steak cook low and slow
